The I-series NVR (such as the DS-7716NI-I4) is one of Hikvision’s most popular and feature-rich recorders. With numerous firmware revisions introduced over the years, it’s crucial for users to closely follow the instructions below to save time and minimize the risk of failure.
Database Optimization and Repair
As the market welcomes more affordable IP cameras with higher video resolution and data sizes, efficient database management becomes essential. Firmware v4.0 brought a new database architecture to ensure future-proof performance.
After upgrading to v4.X, it’s important to convert and optimize the recorder database. If you encounter issues such as expected playback not found, follow the procedures and scenarios below to perform the “Database Repair.”
Preparing the Upgrade
Before proceeding with the upgrade, it’s recommended to export the NVR configuration file over the network or onto a local USB drive.
Upgrading from v3.4.92 build 170518 or Older
-
Ensure that all recorders are updated to v3.4.92 before proceeding. Upgrading directly from versions before v3.4.92 to any v4.X version may cause the recorder to fail.
-
If the recorder is already at v3.4.92, it is highly recommended to perform a full factory default before upgrading to any v4.X version. Failure to default the unit before upgrading may result in unit failure, requiring RMA.
-
After reaching v3.4.92 and performing a full factory default, you can proceed with upgrading directly to v4.50.00.
-
Once the upgrade is complete and the recorder is reprogrammed, it’s advisable to perform a Database Repair. For more details, refer to the section “Database Optimization and Repair” above.
-
To monitor the repair progress, you can check the HDD status or search the recorder log for entries indicating the start and stop of repair. Note that while the HDD is undergoing repair, new recordings can still be made, but some existing recordings may not be searchable until the repair is complete.
-
If playback issues persist after the database repair, check for power, network, or motion detection issues. If the problem continues, please contact our technical support for further assistance.
Upgrading from Any v4.X Build to v4.50.00.
-
You can upgrade any v4.X build directly to v4.50.00.
-
Exporting the configuration is highly recommended before performing the upgrade.
-
If you are upgrading from any v4.X version other than v4.22.005, it is advisable to perform a Database Repair. Refer to Step 4 and onwards in the previous section for more information.
Downgrading
It’s not recommended to downgrade. Due to the constant addition of new features and parameters, downgrading may cause the NVR to factory default itself or require a manual reset to operate properly.
